Jose Mourinho feeling on top of the world after Chelsea victory at Old Trafford
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is excited with his side’s 2-1 victory over Chelsea in Sunday’s Premier League clash at Old Trafford.Willian opened scoring for the Blues in the 32nd minute through an Eden Hazard’s assist, but a Romelu Lukaku’s 39th minute equalizer ensured the Red Devils were back in the game just six minutes before half time.Jesse Lingard sealed the victory for the hosts in the 79th minute to ensure they remain second on the English topflight table with 10 games to the end of the current league season. And the Portuguese born tactician said the victory was special because they defeated the current EPL champions, adding that the Stamford Bridge side are a difficult team to play anytime.“But not because it’s Chelsea, it’s very special because we beat the champions; we beat a fantastic team that is very difficult to beat,”Mourinho was quoted by BBCSport after the match.
“And because these three points are the points that keep us in the second position which is the position we are fighting for and open up a little bit the gap to Chelsea“It’s a very important result for us, feels special because the players gave absolutely everything and it’s not possible to win against teams of the quality of Chelsea without that extra effort that everybody gave,”he added.Mourinho also admitted that his players struggled at the start of the match – reasons they trailed by a lone goal after 32nd minute.
After which Lukaku and Lingard stepped up to score a goal each in either half which rendered Willian’s early goal a mere consolation.“I think we didn’t start well, Chelsea started a lot better, but then progressively, we found our position and confidence on the pitch.“And we were growing strong through the whole game, and then when you go one goal down to win 2-1 with about 15 minutes to go, everybody feels that extraenergy you don’t have when you are losing most of the time. Happiness brings energy.” He continued. The former Real Madrid tactician was full of praise for all of his players for putting extra effort in the game, saying a victory against the defending champions couldn’t have been achieved without extra efforts from all the players.“Everybody gave absolutely everything, Matic was exhausted, he stayed until theend, Lukaku gave his best but I think the last ten minutes was more intelligent than the whole game for the team. When asked about Scott McTominay, Mourinho believes the 21-year-old is ripe for first team football, though believes the former United academy player still has a long way blending well with the team.“I don’t think there are more massive games for him, I think he’s just a player, he is 21 and he was in the academy last season but I think he is much matured.“Of course he has got a lot to learn, of course he will make mistakes, he has a pathway to go through but of course he is a great personality.“He has people like Matic and Carrick to look up to and learn from, and I think our midfield today was so strong because Paul made a fantastic match, Matic and Alexis were also fantastic in their performances.“So I think that everybody gave their best and that’s the only way to beat a team like Chelsea.”Man United are currently 2nd on the table with 59 points from 28 games - 13 points behind Manchester City, who are top of the table with 72 points and a match at hand.
